Bidford Community Group
"To promote and co-ordinate community resources that will enhance the quality of life for parents, families and residents in the Bidford-on-Avon parish and surrounding areas"
Bidford Community Group was founded by a number of young mothers with the aim of improving recreation and play facilities for Bidford children of all ages. Since its formation, the Group has broadened it horizons to include an interest in elderly, disabled and housebound people, and to work for improved lifestyles opportunities for villagers in these categories too. It has, nonetheless, continued its work for children and young people, pioneering the provision of youth meeting points in the village, and with its support for the Youth Club.
The Group has also extended its activities to include educational, social and recreational events, including excursions to places of historic and other interest, computer courses for retired people, and speakers on local history, travel and topical issues. When the Parish Appraisal was first mooted in 2001, Bidford Community Group gave its full support and provided workers at every stage.
Bidford Community Group, formed in 2001, runs 'The Jolly Teapot', a coffee morning held every Thursday in the Parish Hall, Church Street, between 9.30 and 11.30am.
A small charge is made for coffee or tea. Cakes are free, as is the lively conversation that runs freely.
The Jolly Teapot has proved so successful and popular that its tea ladies and cake makers have been used for many Bidford functions over the past years run by St. Laurence's Church and the Parish Council among others.
Once every two months, the Group hosts meetings of Bidford Senior Citizens' Action Network (SCAN) at The Jolly Teapot, where speakers from the District and County Councils, the Health Authorities and the Police - among others - talk on matters of current interest, answer listeners' questions and take the public point of view back to their own organization.
SCAN meetings in 2006 are booked for the fourth Thursday of each alternate month and are widely advertised beforehand.
There is a monthly draw for the Bidford Christmas Lights which takes place on the third Thursday of every month at the Jolly Teapot.
Bidford Community Group publishes the 'Bidford News' twice yearly - a round-up of news and information about life and activities in the village. Additional journalistic, production distribution and other skills are always welcome. A Directory of local services and business is published every two years.
