ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL

Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 December 2014
St Laurence Church, Bidford.

St Laurence's Church will be holding its 17th annual Christmas Tree Festival this year. This event has become increasingly popular, and we regularly get well over 1,000 visitors from all over the Midlands during the weekend.

There are up to 40 decorated Christmas trees round the walls in the church, with a theme of choice. Most carry lights, and the effect is magical when the church lights are periodically switched off after dark and the whole place is illuminated by just the Christmas tree lights. The event is greatly looked forward to by many hundreds of people each December.

Some unusual 'trees' in the past have been made of rope, paper, plastic, and Christmas cakes!

As well as excellent refreshments in the Church Hall and the ever-popular Raffle there are, as always, five classes of tree: Individual/Family, Children (eg. schools), Unassisted Children (aged under 11 with no adult help), Businesses and Local Groups. There is no charge for entering a tree.

The visitors vote for their favourite tree in each class, as well as voting for their favourite tree in the whole event. The raffle is drawn and the prizes are awarded at 6.00pm on the Sunday evening. The event has been televised at least twice, and been mentioned on local radio every year.

Some years ago a Bidford resident said "You can't stop the Christmas Tree Festival now. There'd be a riot!"

ENGLISH SERENATA AND STRATFORD CHAMBER CHOIR: JESUS CHRIST IS BORN TODAY

Saturday 6 December 2014, 7.30pm
The Barn, Bidford-on-Avon.

This year, English Serenata’s Christmas Concert promises to be an especially festive occasion when we are joined by Stratford Chamber Choir, conductor Stephen Dodsworth. By request, we are including more audience carols: O Little Town of Bethlehem, The Holly And The Ivy, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Angels, from the Realms of Glory, The First Nowell, O Come, All Ye Faithful. The choir and soloist Lois Murray will lead the singing, so everyone can relax and join in, (or not, if you prefer). In between, you can sit back and enjoy a feast of Christmas music and during the interval, sample mince pies, cakes and a festive fruit cup.

And we have the ideal instruments to portray the sounds of Christmas – a harp for the angels, flute for the shepherds and cello for the deep notes of a starry night! The choir will sing carols from ‘King’s’ and we are featuring local composers Edward Watson, James Walker and Stephen Dodsworth in our continuing series Music from Shakespeare Country.

Lois and harpist Eleanor Turner will join Stratford Chamber Choir in a performance of Jesus Christ is Born Today by Edward Watson. In this lively retelling of the Christmas message the choir welcomes in the new baby with Breton carols, ‘decking the hall’, ‘baking cakes, pies and puddings’, ‘ringing the bells on Christmas morning’, whilst the soloist, Lois, the universal Mother Mary, dreams about the first Christmas, the long journey, the stable, the star and the mysterious strangers and their gifts. Finally, we are all drawn into the story as we look at the crib scene carved in wood – and Mary remembers that on this day, her baby was born.

The carols are interspersed with instrumental pieces – James Walker’s Fantasia for flute and harp, full of the sound of bells; a cello piece with harp by Birmingham composer Granville Bantock with a Jewish theme; and two trios, by Howard Blake (of Snowman fame) and Watson’s Aegean Dances, for those who plan to spend Christmas relaxing on a Greek Island!
